HOW IS BREAD MADE?

To most people, bread making can be a daunting idea; however this one-loaf yeast bread recipe is amongst the easier concoctions for first-time bakers. You'll be surprised at how soft, moist and tasteful the bread turns out.

The recipe uses basic ingredients and it is best to first start with one loaf to test the waters and see how it turns. The only difference in multigrain breads is the addition of grains. Once you've mastered the kneading technique, you can go ahead and prepare a whole batch.

Multigrain Bread

The ingredients that you need can be found in most kitchens-
3/4 cup warm water
2 1/4 teaspoons of active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

The steps bellow illustrate how you can prepare the bread at home-

Preparing the bread dough-

The first step is to prepare the dough. It will take a few tries before you can master this step, after you've figured out the right amount of flour to use.

Pour warm water in a large bowl.
Add the dry yeast and slowly stir it in until all of it has dissolved.
Proceed to add the salt, sugar, shortening and milk to the mix.
Stir well.
Add 2 cups of flour.
Continue to stir the mix until the dough chases the spoon (you may end up using more or less              flour).

Baking the dough-

This step can be challenging to get right, which is what turns most bakers away. However, after a few tries, you'll no longer be hesitant to put on your baking gloves.

Turn the dough out onto a floured board and proceed to knead. Make sure the dough is soft and          smooth and not sticky. Continue to add flour until you've achieved the desired texture.
Place the dough in a buttered bowl. Turn the dough around in the bowl to ensure that it is                    greased well.
Cover the bowl with a lid and wait for the dough to rise. The process takes approximately an                hour.
Punch the dough down and turn it out onto a floured board and knead.
Preheat the oven to 375 F.
Shape the dough into a loaf.
Place it in a buttered bread pan and cover with lid.
Let it rise for 30 minutes.
Cut three slashes across the risen dough.
Place the dough in the oven and bake until golden brown, which takes 45 minutes.
Turn out the loaf of bread on a dishtowel to cool.

Although it can be tempting to eat the bread right after it's done, do wait until it has cooled down to be able to taste the subtle flavours.  This recipe serves as the perfect base for experimentation. If you are looking for dinner or lunch options, feel free to try your hand at making sandwich bread; just remember to make it thick and dense.
